Why do I paint on mini canvases?
Share
Honestly this blog sort of links to my artist identity one, just a little bit.
As somebody who religously studied fine arts for about 2 years and was surrounded by people in day to day life who seemed to measure the worth of art through canvas size, realism and perfectionsim, mini paintings were always problematic- in that- why don't you make big paintings way? (well -intentioned judgement, am I right!)
Anyway, for me the answer was super obvious:
For one, as a lawyer who actually enjoys her chosen area of research and studies and wants to continue with that as well, to paint and actually complete big canvas art works was way too taxing- I have at least 12-15 unfinished bigger than 12" x12" art canvases- lying there for the mood and rythm to strike again.
Gonna just show a couple of my unfinished big canvases in the pics here:

Starting a canvas and then loosing track of it because the flow breaks or the mood no longer fits is really hard, at least it is for me. I still kept getting new ideas or subjects or art styles I just wanted to paint, so switching to a smaller canvas size really changed the game for me!
Now the 4" x 4" minis have become almost a signature format for me- it keeps my creativity flowing, I actually finish art paintings and they look adorable. This way I keep in touch with my art, don't have mini crisis of continual backlog of unfinished art and as a bonus get to build collectible art for anyone who wants to invest in smaller artworks.
Plus since I've been a kid, I've adored the idea of miniatures, whether it was mini furniture decor, those game sets you got in carnivals, I even fell in love with the itty bitty funko pops when I discovered them. So painting mini art was super aligned❣️
That said, I have managed to complete a 24 " x 24" artwork- but I feel like it was easier to complete it because my minis helped regulate my creativity.
As for being defined as an artist because you choose to paint on small or large formats, its a completely unnecessary and limited view on art. I don't think we need to have pre defined ideas of what we like doing in art- just express yourself like you want- thats what art essentially is.
Would love to discover more views from other artists on this✨
